A mophead hydrangea that can bloom on both old and new wood. Can be cut back heavily in spring, as this wonderful new Hydrangea blooms on new wood by late July. One of the remarkable aspects of this plant is that acidity of soil determines the blue to pink shades of the large colorful blooms. An alkaline soil (ph 6.0 to 6.2) produces pink flowers, while an acid soil (ph 5.2-5.5) produces blue flowers. Apply aluminum sulfate to acidify the soil for blue flowers, but one word of caution: many people have killed their plants by applying too much aluminum sulfate. More is not better. To help raise your pH for pink blooms, you can use dolomitic lime several times a year.
